California investor Kirk Kerkorian's interest in Trans World Airlines has become a wild card in the dramatic reshuffling of trans-Atlantic air travel.
By persuading the Transportation Department to listen to his ideas on buying and rebuilding TWA, Kerkorian has dealt at least a temporary setback to American Airlines, the nation's biggest carrier, which has agreed to pay $445 million for six lucrative TWA London routes.
The government on Wednesday put American's plans to get into London's Heathrow Airport on hold by saying it wanted Kerkorian to present a detailed plan for making TWA a viable carrier. Two days …
