EPA SAYS IT WILL RENEW SEVEN-YEAR registrations for five varieties of genetically modified (GM) corn that contains the insect-resistant Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) gene. The move is a victory for U.S. ag biotechnology companies, which have spent millions of dollars to counter environmentalists' claims that Bt corn may cause allergic reactions in humans and harmful environmental impacts. Critics particularly cite controversial studies showing that Bt crops may harm the larvae of Monarch butterflies.
